A Recipe For Safety
Posted August 19, 2020.
While you are enjoying your fun summer activities this month, don’t forget to protect your face and teeth.
A couple of weeks ago I shared an email with you about a motorcycle accident which we witnessed. It got me thinking about being more careful on the roads when we are driving and when we are on two wheeled vehicles. (I spend a fair amount of time on my mountain bike and road bike so I’m always on the lookout!)
Recently, researchers from the Texas A&M College of Dentistry found that of the patients who visited the emergency room in 2018-2019 due to electric scooter accidents, 60% had head and face injuries.
One of our own great patients at Pinecrest Dental had a scooter accident earlier in the year and lost her sense of taste (for chocolate) amidst other things from the brain trauma.
Fifty-eight percent of the facial injuries in this study were considered severe, including hemorrhage, concussions, and fractures.About 20% of the emergency room visits from electric scooters involve alcohol use and riders who are not wearing helmets - even though rental companies require the riders to sign disclosures to wear protective gear and be smart about their driving.
After a story my wife recently read, we have pushed our son a lot more to be wearing his helmet, because he loves zipping around the neighborhood on his own scooter.
To help promote oral health awareness, we are putting together a recipe book of “Mouth Friendly Recipes.” These will be helpful for our community in sponsoring the growth and awareness of our mouth, which of course helps our whole bodies stay healhty! We hope you’ll share yours with us! To do so, all you need to do is either type in, or copy and paste your own recipe to this online document. Be sure to include any special instructions, your name, any contributors, and any photos that you will find helpful. We’ll be sharing the compiled book with our patients in a few months, after we get it edited and printed at our expense. Thanks for sharing!

P.P.S. Here’s the quote of the day by F Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button:
The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.
