A Tongue Injury Might Need First Aid While Seeking Professional Treatment

Posted April 28, 2017.

Most tongue injuries are minor and result from accidentally biting your lip while chewing gum or eating a quick snack. Yet there are some rare instances when something like an accidental fall can cause you to bite down hard on your lip.

This level of oral trauma often calls for quality first aid and it might also require professional treatment at Pinecrest Dental.

Please note, if your tongue is bleeding excessively, you should strongly consider seeking emergency care at an urgent care facility or the local Emergency Room.

It’s important to assess the severity of the injury to your tongue. If blood or other debris are obscuring your view, you can rinse them away gently with a little lukewarm saltwater. This can also help soothe injured tissues. Avoid using antiseptic mouthwash as it can easily irritate the tongue injury. If your tongue is bleeding excessively, you shouldn’t swallow the blood as this can upset your stomach.

If your tongue is bleeding, you can wrap it in a few layers of sterile gauze and apply light pressure. If you can’t easily hold the gauze with your fingers, you might want to try pressing it to the roof of your mouth.

If after 20 minutes the bleeding persists or if you feel that the pain is getting worse, you should strongly consider going the emergency room or a nearby urgent care facility for more advanced treatment.

If you live in the Taylorsville, Utah, area and you’ve suffered a tongue injury that requires further care, you can always call (801) 503.0035 to seek treatment from Dr. Tyler Williams.
