Details About the 3 Stages of Gum Disease
Posted October 19, 2016.
Did you know that gum disease is so complex that it has three different stages? Well, it’s true, and those stages are:
Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease. It is the inflammation and infection of the gums that is caused by the buildup of plaque along the gumline. This stage usually develops when you have poor brushing and flossing techniques and when you skip your dental cleaning appointments. This stage can usually be reversed by having improvements in your oral hygiene routine and by receiving a professional cleaning or scaling and root planing treatment.
Periodontitis: This is the second stage of gum disease. It involves the bacteria in your mouth spreading into the gums and underlying bone. When this happens, the gums become so irritated that they start to move away from the teeth. This forms pockets that tend to trap plaque and food particles, causing infection.
Advanced Periodontitis: This is the last stage of gum disease. It involves the bacteria destroying the bone that holds your teeth in place. This often results in shifting, loose, and lost teeth. This can severely affect your bite and your overall health.
Gum disease in Taylorsville, Utah, often develops when you let plaque live on your smile. Plaque is a harmful substance that needs to be removed on a regular basis by brushing and flossing regularly and by attending your six month checkup.
