You May Be at an Increased Risk for Gum Disease

Posted January 25, 2017.

Are you adequately protecting yourself from the dangers of gum disease? Periodontal disease, more commonly referred to as gum disease, is a disease caused by the breakdown and decay of the gum tissues around your teeth. Over time, the tissue loss can result in the total loss of your teeth. To prevent gum disease, it is important to assess the risks that can lead to its causes.

You may be at an increased risk for gum disease. Pinecrest Dental reminds you to be aware of the following:

– Gum disease can be caused by bad saliva flow. Many medications cause dry mouth symptoms.

– Hormonal changes in girls and women could increase their danger for gingivitis, a precursor to gum disease. The risk is due to heightened sensitivity in your gums.

– Sometimes gum disease can be caused by genetics alone. Some individuals tend to be more genetically inclined to gum disease than others.

– Treatments for various diseases, including cancer, can have a damaging effect on your gums, potentially leading to gum disease.

– People who suffer from diabetes are at a higher risk for infections, which includes gum disease.

– Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease. Besides the vast array other illness that could potentially arise, smoking can directly cause gum disease and lower your chances for a successful treatment of the disease. Chewing tobacco is also another risk factor.

If you are suffering from gum disease, or feel you may be at risk for the disease, please contact our office at (801) 503.0035 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tyler Williams at our office in Taylorsville, Utah. Making your smile healthy again is our goal!
