Your 3 Levels of Friendship
Posted February 22, 2021.
Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher, once wrote about three very distinct types of friendships in the eighth volume of The Nicomachean Ethics; the friendship of utility, the friendship of pleasure, and the friendship of the good. Out of these three types of friendships, there is only one that will last the test of time, which is something we all strive to achieve.
First and foremost, is the friendship of utility, which is a very common type of friendship in today’s society. This type of friendship is born from the convenience of having this person around, such as a workout partner. You both may benefit from your friendship on a certain level, but it will not go any farther than how you both can help each other reach your goals.
The second type, is the friendship of pleasure. This type of friendship is also very common and while it may not be the long lasting type of friendship, they do help you by keeping you happy and cheerful. This is the type of friendship where you occasionally get together, share a meal, and share stories, solely for the purpose of entertainment.
Lastly, but certainly the most important, we have the friendship of the good. This type of friendship is the one we all strive for, but truthfully, can be somewhat hard to find. You can talk about anything and everything in this type of friendship, you value this person in all aspects, and you can trust this person completely; while also knowing that this person has a mutual understanding of your friendship!
While it may be true that the friendship of the good is the type that will last a lifetime, each type of friendship has its place in your life. So, going forward, we ask that you take the time to think about your friendships and what type they may be and how they affect your life for the better!
On behalf of everyone here at Pinecrest Dental, we hope that you build strong friendships this year and beyond, and we sincerely look forward to seeing you during your next visit.
