Don’t Ignore a Chipped Tooth

Posted June 14, 2016.

A chip in one or more of your teeth is not an uncommon occurrence. As time goes by accidents, blows to the face or accidentally biting down on something hard in your food, can lead to minor imperfections in tooth enamel. This is even more likely if you have a bad habit of chewing on pens and pencils or grinding your teeth at night.

Many chips are limited to the shallow enamel layer of a tooth, and cause little to no pain. This can tempt some people to ignore getting the chip treated or repaired.

When this happens the newly exposed surface invites bacteria to begin the process of tooth decay. With the loss of tooth enamel caused by the chip, any tooth decay that develops, will be perilously close to the sensitive interior of the tooth.

Should a cavity begin to grow it will spread faster and risk much more severe complications. This could infect the dentin, pulp or root of a tooth and in time require a complete restoration by a root canal and crown.

If the chip is addressed early, Pinecrest Dental can often repair it with a simple filling, to restore the full function of the tooth. If the chip is on a tooth in your smile, a dental veneer might be your preferred option.

If you have a chipped tooth, you should call Pinecrest Dental at (801) 503.0035 to discuss your treatment and restoration options.
