Preventing The Dangers Of Tooth Decay During The Holidays!

It may be hard to imagine, but a tiny cavity in a tooth or swelling around the gums called “periodontitis” can be life threatening when the infection spreads to the brain, heart or by the swelling closing off the airway.

A recent study found that nearly 8,000 hospitalizations per year were due primarily to dental abscesses, and nearly 10 people per year died as a result of the infection going untreated. Fortunately, great home hygiene and routine visits to the dentist will drastically minimize your chance of developing a tooth abscess!

With the Holidays well under way, we all know what that means, lots of great tasting sweets! But dental decay doesn’t develop solely from candy and cake, it comes from many other processed foods such as crackers, bread and juice.

We all have a powerful weapon to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis, home hygiene! This includes more than brushing twice daily. Just as important is flossing once per day, and drinking water with every meal, and especially after consuming soft drinks or sugary treats. Many of our patients also find using an oral irrigator such as a Waterpik or AirFloss greatly reduces the amount of sensitivity and gum bleeding they experienced in the past. Using xylitol cooking additives and xylitol mints between meals strengthens your teeth and keeps your breath fresher!
